Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
