Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
