Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
