Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
