Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
