Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
