Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
